Volunteering

Ouseburn

Newcastle Futures recognise that volunteering can provide a successful route in to employment for many people. It can provide people with new skills and experience, increased confidence as well as access to a wider network of contacts.

Some people may not feel they are ready for work at the moment and volunteering can help bridge that gap by providing the support and experience which will help improve their longer term goals of finding employment.

What is volunteering?

This is when you can choose to give your time and energy to benefit other people and yourself without being paid for it. You may be given out of pocket expenses for travel. In the UK, more and more people are volunteering every year, it also gives people a good sense of well being as well as builds confidence and skills.

As a volunteer, you could:

Volunteer with a charity or other voluntary organisation for example:

  • Caring for animals and wildlife
  • Working to run community cafe and projects
  • Spending time mentoring and befriending a young person or refugee
  • Volunteering outdoors to improve the environment or supporting at one off local community projects
  • Volunteer with a public-sector organisation like a hospital or school
  • Help your community at one-off gardening projects or festivals
  • and many more

It is not volunteering if you:

  • Doing something for a family member for example volunteer in a family members shop
  • Are given money in addition to your expenses, or
  • Are under contract to do it (this does not include any ‘volunteer agreement’ you may have)
